Every week, we shine a spotlight on one Lincoln Public Schools staff member! This week, meet Becky Boswell, teacher at Lefler Middle School.
“Becky has been a figurehead at Lefler for over 30 years. She not only teaches here, but was a student at Lefler. She immerses students in critical thinking, honors student and family culture and engages students in social studies topics that are relevant and timely.” - Michele Suiter, Lefler Middle School principal
In a few sentences, briefly describe your role at LPS.
I teach eighth grade American History and one period of Learning Center where I help kids get caught up in their classes.
How long have you worked for LPS?
This is my 32nd year.
What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS?
I love history, working with kids and being creative. Teaching allows me to do all of those things,
What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding?
The kids. It's exciting to see them grow as learners, become more confident in their writing, ask high-level questions about history and enjoy learning. They are also hilarious and make me laugh every day. I love seeing former students in the community and hearing what they are doing now and laughing about things that happened when they were in my class.
In one word, what makes you proud to work for LPS?
Diversity.
Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from?
I did. Randolph Elementary, Lefler Jr. High and Lincoln High. Go Links!
What path did you take after completing your formal education?
I started college right after high school, but decided I needed a break and wanted to explore my love of politics. I worked on political campaigns for several years and felt like I was making a difference in the world through that, but eventually I realized that my true calling was teaching. Along the way, I got married and had a baby. Ten years after graduating from high school, I graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. When my sons were a bit older, I was able to earn my master’s degree in historical studies from Nebraska Wesleyan.
What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community?
I enjoy the diversity Lincoln has and the sense of community. For many years now, I've had the children of former students in my class and I love that connection.
What is your favorite childhood book or a book that has influenced your life positively?
“The Little House on the Prairie” series was an absolute favorite when I was a child.
Share a shoutout to a former teacher who impacted your life.
Carolynn Goodwin at Lincoln High. I was lucky enough to work with her all three years at LHS and then she taught my son, too. He loved her almost as much as I did!
