We help SOLVE problems!!
The 2002-2003 Mediators have not been named yet.
Some of the skills worked on were:
-recognizing conflict
-understanding some of the ways people deal with
conflict
-learning about 'synergy'-how working together
can accomplish more than by working alone
-understanding how 'feelings' impact conflict
-knowing the 'rules' of mediation: remain neutral,
information is confidential, no interrupting, each person gets
heard,...
-knowing the steps of mediation:
S - select the problem
O - observe, organize and define the problem
L - learn by questioning and listening
V - visualize possible solutions
E - employ a solution and monitor results
Mediators spent time practicing being both a mediator
and a disputant (a person in conflict) so they each saw things
from both perspectives. With some help, these ten students will
be helping to mediate conflict between and among seventh, eighth,
and ninth graders. We know that conflict exists and sometimes
positive things happen because of conflict. How people deal with
conflict makes the difference!
