Welcome to Millard Lefler Middle School located in Lincoln, Nebraska. We are a middle school composed of grades 6, 7, and 8 and have approximately 650 students. We are located close to the "middle" of our city and therefore we serve students not only from our surrounding neighborhood, but from all over the Lincoln area. The strength of our school is in the teaching staff and the diversity of students who come from different social, economic, and cultural backgrounds Our school first opened its doors on September 12, 1955. Our school was named after Mr. Millard Lefler, who began his career with the Lincoln Public Schools as an assistant principal of Lincoln High School. He became superintendent of schools in 1920. Some of Mr. Lefler's accomplishments were: creating the position of director of elementary education, initiating the junior high school system, developing vocational training in the senior highs and starting adult education programs. When Mr. Lefler was interviewed at the dedication ceremony for the school named in honor of him and he had to say, "I couldn't think of any place a person could be more proud to have his name associated with than a school." Mr. Lefler was superintendent of the Lincoln Public schools from 1920 to 1948.The land that the Lefler school was built upon (12 acres) cost the district $12,000 and was purchased in 1912. The cost of the building was $1,227,000.There have been five principals of Lefler since 1955. They are:Kathryn Hurst, Bob Knaub, Dr. Don Grassmeyer, Hugh McDermott and Kelly Schrad. Presently there are 53 teachers, an assistant principal, and 3 counselors that make up the teaching staff. In addition, there are 12 paraeducators, 8 kitchen helpers, 8 custodians, and a number of volunteers. (c) Lefler Middle School 1999-2005 |
