Lefler counselors will support school success by promoting academic achievement, attendance and appropriate behavior.

To support the academic achievement of students, Lefler implemented a program called the "Pyramid of Interventions".   Students who need additional academic support are placed into the Pyramid based on their grades and attendance.   Teachers, administrators and counselors monitor the progress of these students weekly.   Counselors provide additional support through individual goal setting.

Parents can support school success by:

The purpose of the guidance and counseling program is to assist all students in becoming effective lifelong learners, responsible citizens, and productive workers who have the ability to set and achieve personal goals which lead to increased personal satisfaction. The guidance and counseling program provides a system to facilitate the educational development, career exploration and development, and personal/social development of our students. Counselors are members of the grade level teams and participate in and facilitate team plans and discussions.

MAT Reading Scores

MAT: Scores of the Metropolitan Achievement Tests have increased steadily at LPS over the past five years. Results of the most recent MAT in the Basic Battery indicate a one to two percent improvement in grades five-seven. Overall, LPS third graders did better than nearly 75% of the test-takers nationwide in reading. Seventh graders from LPS scored better in reading than 67% of students across the nation.

THAT MEANS: Average MAT reading scores for LPS students were better than those for the state and the nation.

OUR GOAL: Those scores are good, but we want to do better. In the coming year we are setting the goal of having LPS students reach an average score of 75% for the MAT reading.

OUR CHALLENGES: Include the changing landscape in the community— a student population that includes growing numbers of children in poverty, children of color, children from countries across the globe, and children who require special educational services.

OUR STRENGHTS AND STRATEGIES: To achieve improved MAT reading scores include a rigorous curriculum, quality staff and staff development, effective assessment practices, maintaining a small class size in the primary grades, and continuing our successful Reading Recovery Program.

We want to share the good news. We invite you to join us and make our good schools—great.
